Gordon West Cup: Strabane 21 Virginia 18 Final

On Saturday morning Strabane faced Virginia in the Gordon West Cup Final at Ravenhill in front of a very vocal and partisan crowd. A strong wind blew diagonally across the pitch bringing strong sunshine and sleet showers.

This was the most exciting game of rugby that I’ve covered all season, played by two teams, who showed passion and no little skills.

It was a very even first 20 minutes, as both teams sounded each other out. Defences were on top as big hits cancelled out attacks.

Ronan Smith added a dropped goal, penalty goal and a conversion for Virginia

On 21 minutes a Strabane goal line drop out was fielded by Ronan Smith 40 metres out. His dropped goal crept over the bar to give Virginia a 3-0 lead.
