Queens 2 defeat Instonians 27-26 in the McCrea Cup Semi Final

Saturday’s early kick off, at Upper Malone featured the McCrea Cup semi final between Queens II and Instonians.

Playing into the wind, Instonians took control early on, through a Josh Davidson try converted by Matthew King.

Queens started to struggle in the set piece, especially scrums, where the larger, more cohesive Instonians pack started to win penalties. This only got worse as the game progressed, with the referee eventually yellow carding a prop for persistent offending.

Oscar Egan burrows over for the 1st of his 2 tries

Despite being starved of ball in the set piece, the Queens back row secured possession in the loose. A 14th minute attack saw Oscar Egan burrow over for a close range try, converted by Angus Christie to level the scores at 7 apiece.

Despite lack of possession Queens scored another short range try by Paddy Eames, again converted by Christie to lead 14-7.

They increased the lead with a Christie penalty goal on 35 minutes. Then in the final act of the 1st half Egan got another close range try to give Queens an unlikely 22-7 halftime lead, given their lack of possession.

Matthew Salters pulled points back for Instonians with a try after 51 minutes, only for another close range try by Queens, through Niall Carvill to leave the score 27-12 in Queens favour.

Ally Burke powers for the line

Instonians tries by Salters, 60 minutes, and Ricky McCarthy, 75 minutes, both converted by Ally Burke, brought the score to 27-26 setting up a frantic last 5 minutes. Instonians threw everything at the Queens defence, which held firm for victory and a place in the McCrea Cup Final on Saturday 23rd April.
