We caught up with the Mighty Larne III’s on Saturday afternoon a they hosted high flying Grosvenor III’s in the second round of the McCambley Cup at the Glynn.
Both teams had been progressing well this season in their respective leagues and we expected quite a thriller despite the damp and dank conditions at the picturesque Glynn playing fields.
The game started in a soft rain and dark conditions but, despite an early burst from the Larne midfielder Gary Mills, it quickly tuned in favour of the visitors as Larne struggled to cope with a raft of call ups to the 2nd XV’s big game.
The home team battled throughout but they lost their defensive shape too often and slipped off too many tackles to contain the hard running Grosvenor side that ran in five tries in the first half.
The visitors scores came from Willie Rea, Dee Montgomery, Danny Armstrong, Liam Slaughter and Scott Adams with Armstrong adding two conversions and a penalty.
Most of the damage occurred in the fist half as Grosvenor cut loose but Larne continued to battle throughout the second to claim a consolation score.
Final score: Larne III 5 Grosvenor III 32
