Championship Women: Queen’s University II 5 Ballynahinch 8

We are currently carrying out a necessary behind-the-scenes upgrade to how images are stored and delivered on The Front Row Union Sports. With over 770,000 images on the site, we are moving our entire image library to a dedicated cloud storage service. This means images will load faster for you, regardless of where you are in the world, and the site will be more reliable overall.

As we are working on three separate versions of images during the offload process, the site cache sometimes struggles to keep up with which version to display and occasionally post grid images or complete galleries may fail to appear. This is a temporary side effect of the migration process — the image exists and is safe, it is simply in the process of being moved to its new home and identified as being there. A refresh of the page will usually bring them back, however, if it does not please contact john@thefrontrowunion.com stating clearly the post address and we will restore it as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes and appreciate your patience.

We expect the bulk of the image migration to be completed by the end of June 2026, with a fully upgraded version of the site ready to launch in August 2026. Once that work is done, the site will be noticeably faster, images will load more reliably, and you will not see any further disruption of this kind. Thank you for your continued support of The Front Row Union Sports.

Queen’s University 2nd XV entertained Ballynahinch in the Championship at the sometimes sunny, sometimes wet and miserable, Dub playing fields on Sunday afternoon.

The game was far from a classic with both teams a bit rusty after the long lay off but it was a useful enough outing for both sides.

Niamh Gilgunn and Jane Patton scored a try and penalty for Ballynahinch in the first half against Queen’s.

Ballynahinch pretty much dominated the first half with the bulk of the play down the far end of the pitch from my position. The visitors opened the scoring after 10 minutes with prop smashing through the Queens defence for the first try. Hinch created a few chances in the first half but a great cross field tackle from Queen’s and some strong defence from the Queen’s forwards on their own line restricted Hinch to a penalty from to give Hinch an 8 – 0 lead at half time.

Ruth Montgomery scored a second half try for Queen’s

Queen’s edged the second half but, with the weather deteriorating, it took them until the last quarter to find the try line with powering over to take the score to 5 – 8 with 10 minutes left. Hinch worked their way down field to try and secure the game but Queen’s held out and a late break by looked all set for the winning score only for the last pass to be dropped on the try line.

Disappointment for Queen’s but, on balance, a deserved win for Ballynahinch.
