Ballynahinch IV’s entertained Ballymena III’s in the opening round of the Forster Cup at Ballymacarn Park on Saturday afternoon.

On a bitterly cold day with frozen hands dropping the ball on occasion, both teams struggled to get their running game going. More often than not the ball was dropped at a crucial time allowing the opponents to counter.

The home team managed to secure a couple of penalties, converting one through their No 12 Martin O’Neill.

There was little to choose between the teams in the first half as the score suggests.

The visitors started the second half much stronger and a number of attacks were just stopped short. Continued pressure resulted in a typical scrum half’s try for the visitor’s No 9 Ben Scullion, near the posts with No 15 Curtis Wylie converting.

Another cross field attack by the visitors resulted in Ballymena’s winger No 11 Peter Munce, scoring in the corner to increase the lead.

A bit of indiscipline then resulted in a penalty for the visitors, Wylie again successful from the kick, rattling the score along to 3 – 15

The home team tried to respond with little success and it was the visitors who crossed the line, yet again, near the end with No 4 Connor White doing the damage.

At the full time whistle, it was a deserved victory for the visitors.
