There may be fewer teams left in the competitions as we head into these final weeks but that makes the predictions all the harder as the best teams rise to the top and make for some very difficult-to-call match ups:
CUP, PLATE & BOWL PREDICTIONS
Ballymena Academy v RBAI
This could turn out to be one of the closest semifinals in recent years and very difficult to call as neither side was truly tested in their previous two Cup fixtures. However, given their Cup experience and high confidence gained from equally high-scoring games in their favour I feel that RBAI will just manage to edge this one. Yes, Inst’s opponents in their fixtures were arguably weaker but the manner of their victories could prove to be a powerful catalyst for any struggle they might face in this game.
MY PICK: RBAI
Campbell College v Dalriada
The Belfast side survived a late push in the previous round against fierce rivals MCB and secured victory with a single point; Dalriada would appear to be a stronger team than Methody this season, but after Campbell’s previous win any sense of fear will have dissipated from the Belfast side and that could spell trouble for the boys from Ballymoney. Yes, Dalriada will give a good show of themselves, but this is probably where their Cup dream ends.
MY PICK: Campbell College
Coleraine GS v Wallace HS
While the Lisburn side have been ranked in the top-5 all season, Coleraine have had to climb their way up from just below mid-table to earn their current position of seventh and it’s this type of determination Wallace will need to be wary of. Having said that, This Wallace side have more than enough to see off Coleraine and should be more determined any team left in the Plate as they know their Cup loss against Ballymena could have been easily avoided.
MY PICK: Wallace HS
Rainey ES v Down HS
The side from Downpatrick appear to have shrugged off the brief run of losses which threatened to derail their season after a fairly emphatic 25-12 win over Ballyclare HS; in fact, they were unlucky in some respects with three of those losses as the margin was only six points or fewer. On the other hand, Rainey now look to be struggling to get results, their previous game at home to Regent going to a replay, and could very well miss out altogether when they face Down HS at the weekend.
MY PICK: Down HS
Grosvenor GS v Portora RS
As Portora RS prepare to amalgamate with Enniskillen Collegiate in September it’s fitting that they end their final season with a chance to earn some silverware; however, Grosvenor have been fantastic throughout the season and to deny them a trophy would also be unfair. In fact, I feel it is Grosvenor’s superior form that will see them spoil the party for Portora and ultimately finish as winners of this game.
MY PICK: Grosvenor GS
