I caught up with the Girls U18 League match between players from Carrick, Larne, Ophir and Malone against players from Cavan, Clogher Valley and Monaghan on Sunday afternoon at Larne RFC, The Glynn.
The game kicked off with CLOM playing into a strong wind, but they had plenty of willing carriers to take the ball up the middle of the park. CCVM scrambled well in defence, but the pressure eventually told and Cora Cahill powered over, with the help of Ruby Starrett, for the opening try for a 5 – 0 lead after 11 minutes.
Starrett and Cara McLean combined well on the right on a couple of occasions to punch big holes in the CCVM defence, and a break through the middle saw Abi Carson cross for their second try and a 12–0 lead after Megan Creighton added the extras with 15 minutes played.
A bustling run down the right saw Katie McAlister battle over 8 minutes later to take the score to 17 – 0.
The half was wrapped up with McLean rounding the defence, after a break by Carson, to finish under the posts for Creighton to convert and give CLOM a 24-0 lead at halftime.
With the wind at their back CLOM were pretty much unstoppable in the second half, despite some well worked breaks from CCVM.
Carson competed with her hat trick with two tries in the second half, and McLean added her second for a brace. Linchpin, and captain, Starrett added one more for a final score of CLOM 50 CCVM 0.
