City of Armagh romp to a big 53-20 win over Omagh Academicals in the Senior Cup Semi Final

On Saturday there were perfect overhead and underfoot conditions at the Palace Grounds for the Ulster Senior Cup Semi Final between City of Armagh and Omagh Academicals.

Armagh started brightly but were unable to convert territory and possession into points. Crucial passes and offloads were dropped with the line at their mercy.

Armagh’s pressure eventually told when a Harry Boyd penalty goal gave them a 3-0 lead after 16 minutes.

Luke Hanson ran in from midway for Omagh’s opening try

Omagh absorbed Armagh’s pressure and broke out in a sweeping move that had Luke Hanson run in from midway. Kyle Beattie converted to give Omagh a 7-3 lead.

Armagh responded with a Andrew Willis try on 35 minutes to retake the lead, only for a 40th minute Beattie penalty goal to give a Omagh 10-8 halftime lead.

There were some very choice words from the Armagh coaching staff at halftime and Armagh emerged from the break charged up.

Kyle Faloon’s 48th minute try, converted by Boyd restored Armagh’s lead 15-10, only for an Omagh to reply with a Mervyn Edgar try to level the scores at 15 apiece.

Thereafter Armagh cut lose. Passes and offloads, which were dropped in the 1st half, now stuck.

Matthew Hooks scored wide out

Tries by Matthew Hooks, 58 mins, Eoin O’Hagan, 64 mins, Shea O’Brien 70 mins and Faloon, 72 mins, all converted by Boyd, took Armagh out to an unassailable 48-15 lead.

Eoin O’Hagan got one for the pack!

Omagh pulled a try back with Matthew Eccles 78th minute effort, only for Armagh to have the last say when Evin Crummie scored in the corner, in the last move of the game, to leave Armagh winners 53-20.

With Belfast Harlequins concession, earlier in the week, Armagh now face Queens in the Senior Cup Final at Kingspan Stadium on Saturday 14th May.
