We took a dip into the provincial leagues on Saturday with Bob Given covering the Premier Division 1 match between Queen’s 2nd XV and Grosvenor 2nd XV at The Dub.
Playing into a strong wind Queens set about their task with relish. They took the lead in 2 minutes with an unconverted try by Harry McMeekin and doubled it on 4 minutes when Charlie Irvine touched down to give Queens a 10-0 lead.
Despite the aid of a very strong wind Grosvenor couldn’t gain a foothold in the Queens half. They finally managed some territory and Ethan Fitzimmons touched down for an unconverted try to narrow the score to 10 – 5.
A 2nd try for McMeekin, converted by Angus Christie gave Queens a 17 – 0 lead after 28 minutes. Nicky Woods try and Christie’s conversion brought Queens lead to 24 – 0 on 33 minutes. Diachi Budiman’s try after 38 minutes and McMeekin’s hat trick score on 40 minutes, converted by Christie gave Queens a comfortable 36 – 5 lead at the break.
Perhaps Queens didn’t use the wind to its full advantage in the 2nd half, but they managed 4 tries. PJ Tiernan claimed a hat trick and Simon McMaster grabbed the fourth. Three were converted by Christie for Queens to win 62 – 5.
