Championship 1: Cooke 27 Carrickfergus 12

We are currently carrying out a necessary behind-the-scenes upgrade to how images are stored and delivered on The Front Row Union Sports. With over 770,000 images on the site, we are moving our entire image library to a dedicated cloud storage service. This means images will load faster for you, regardless of where you are in the world, and the site will be more reliable overall.

As we are working on three separate versions of images during the offload process, the site cache sometimes struggles to keep up with which version to display and occasionally post grid images or complete galleries may fail to appear. This is a temporary side effect of the migration process — the image exists and is safe, it is simply in the process of being moved to its new home and identified as being there. A refresh of the page will usually bring them back, however, if it does not please contact john@thefrontrowunion.com stating clearly the post address and we will restore it as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes and appreciate your patience.

We expect the bulk of the image migration to be completed by the end of June 2026, with a fully upgraded version of the site ready to launch in August 2026. Once that work is done, the site will be noticeably faster, images will load more reliably, and you will not see any further disruption of this kind. Thank you for your continued support of The Front Row Union Sports.

I arrived at this one a touch late thanks to a flat tyre somewhere between Ballynahinch and Belvoir, the changeover not helped by a rounded wheel nut which needed a bit of gentle persuasion to get the socket wrench over!

Carrick enjoyed a fair bit of territory on our arrival at this game.

Cooke were leading 5 – 0 at the time of arrival courtesy of an unconverted try. However it was Carrick who were enjoying territory and possession midway through the first half.

It looked as though the pressure was going to count when the Carrick pack forced their way over the line, out on the left, but a knock-on led to Cooke cheers and the home side cleared the danger and finished off the half on the offensive.

The pressure on the Carrick line led to a yellow card and took advantage of the missing backrower to power over for Cooke’s second try to give the home side a 10 – 0 lead as the teams changed ends.

Carrick started the second half strongly but Cooke looked dangerous when they piled their resources into attack, the home side consistently making ground with the ball in hand. One such break ended up with bundling over close to the posts for a converted try but Carrick responded through a chip and chase from who finally got the visitors on the scoreboard with his individual effort to leave Carrick trailing 17 – 5.

Despite losing their hooker for 10 minutes Cooke continued to play on the front foot and the impressive pushed them into bonus point territory with a well worked try on the right. However, Carrick responded almost immediately with a penalty try and the home side found themselves temporarily down to 13 players, if only for a couple of minutes, before their hooker returned from his time in the naughty corner.

Carrick probably got too involved with the individual battles as their concentration was never really there in the final quarter and Cooke wrapped up the game with a late try, from out wide, to take the game 27 – 12.
