We are fortunate, since starting our journey into hockey, to have one of the dominant forces in the women’s game playing in our own back yard in the form of, defending All Ireland Champions, Pegasus HC.
The Belfast based lean, mean, hockey machine moved one point clear at the top of the EYHL on Saturday afternoon at The Dub after seeing of the challenge of the, Limerick based, Catholic Institute in an enthralling encounter.
Both teams went into the game knowing that a win would put them top of the table and both were defending an unbeaten record with two wins and two draws apiece over the previous four rounds.
The first quarter was a cagey affair as the teams sounded each other out. Pegasus looked to have the edge early on but the impressive Roisin Upton was a calming presence for the visitors in the centre of their defence.
Pegasus got the breakthrough at the end of the second quarter when Lucy McKee slotted home after a break down the left to give Pegasus a 1 – 0 lead as the teams changed ends.
Insta had an impressive third quarter as they upped their game in search of an equaliser and they got their reward when Naomi Carroll equalised towards the end of the third quarter to set up an exciting finale.
Pegasus weathered the storm and met the physical challenge of their opponents in an exciting final quarter with the experienced Shirley McCay slotting home the winning penalty corner. Fellow goal scorer McKee continued to play a vital role covering every inch of the pitch in the final minutes to take the pressure of the home sides defence and getting onto a stack of photos in the process. 🙂
