Club: Cavan 0 Civil Service 12 (Kukri Q4)

Service opened their Kukri Qualifying 4 League campaign with a 0 – 12 points away win to Cavan on Saturday. The visitors had to repulse a ferocious onslaught from their hosts as they waited for the ‘journey time’ to get out of their legs.

On 15 minutes, Dan Cartland opened the scoring for Service with a well taken try after a Peter Hoskins mazy run took him to within feet of the Cavan try line before being felled with a last gasp ankle tap. Hoskins was able to offload to the supporting Cartland before going on to convert the score himself.

In the second half, a well worked move in the lineout, saw the powerful Brendan Smith, take a clever ball from hooker Jonny Cartwright, which allowed the burly prop to crash over the line for an unconverted try.

This was a very tough opener for the East Belfast side and so far away from home, but they showed true grit and determination to come away with two valuable league points in the bag.

A joint Man of the Match, was awarded to Trevor McDowell at tight head and Matthew Robinson at open side flanker, for their fantastic work rate and commitment . . .
