It’s a funny old game! I was accosted twice today by old friends while I was settling some debts with local tradesmen around Larne! You’re a quisling for Ulster Rugby stated one and when are you going to see through Anscombe stated the other! You would think that it’s enough that a media mogul like myself chooses to boost the local economy without having to listen to gripes about my writings!
The conversations were the sort only old team-mates can have and probably best if not repeated in full but there was a strange synchronicity about the two events in that they both mentioned the phrase, “When are you going to see that the Emperor has no clothes?”, though one was in relation to Anscombe and the other Rory Best!
The conversation pertaining to Anscombe was fairly brief as we’ve both still to be persuaded that the Kiwi has added much of substance to the team dynamic, convinced as we were that was more circumstances, than judgement, that contributed to the unbeaten run. Perhaps if Ulster had followed up Northampton away with a home win then things would be different but undeniably the doubts came racing . . .
