Bhebesi Pride are offering six people the chance to make a difference in the lives of children in Africa through rugby. Read on for more details.

After two years of project development, Bhubesi Pride’s TransAfrique mission, departing in January 2012, involving a team of six highly qualified coaches and teachers driving through Africa over six months from the UK to South Africa, delivering a mass participation rugby, sports and education programme in ten African countries, is now ready to open its doors to enthusiastic and committed candidates.

Contributing to 3 of the UN’s 8 Millennium Development Goals, and working Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, the project’s objectives are as follows:

UNITE African children through sport, delivering health education and life skills

EMPOWER local teaching staff, providing equipment, resources and knowledge

INSPIRE long term development through the establishment and development of international [British and African] school links

Recent project work in March and April saw Richard Bennett (Bhubesi Pride Project Coordinator) work with staff at 15 partner schools in the ten aforementioned African countries, supporting non government organisations [NGOs] and national rugby unions, preparing for next year’s 2012 mission the first in a three year sustainable programme. African schools are also forming long term sustainable links with schools in the UK.

To see highlights of the work carried out during this 7 week mission [EDU DEV 2011] as well as plans for next year, you can view three project videos below:

Bhubesi Pride [a United Through Sport project, UK registered sports charity] has developed collaborations with fantastic NGOs, such as Mkombozi Agency in Tanzania and the Bobs for Good Foundation in South Africa. The latter was co founded by former Springbok captain, Bob Skinstad – one of the project’s two main high profile supporters. The other is former Wales International and Lions legend, JPR Williams.

Both hope to join the expedition coaching team during the course of the six month project next year!

With further support from the IRB, the European Parliament, excellent coverage through impressive media and press partners, as well as experiencing Africa in a truly unique way, travelling from country to country via 4×4 vehicles, the opportunity for applicants to be part of this project is huge.

The application process began last year, and we’re now maximising July and August 2011 to offer individuals one last chance to be involved.

The application process is now open – apply online here.

Closing date: Sunday 21st August 2011
