David McIlwaine to Doncaster

The FRONT ROW UNION learnt last night of the transfer of another young Ulster player with David McIlwaine agreeing terms with English Championship side Doncaster Knights where he’ll team up with Leinster youngster Michael Keating.

McIlwaine made his début for the Ulster senior side in a pre-season friendly against Harlequins this season where he had an impressive outing at full back. It was somewhat surprising that after a solid display that the youngster was subsequently selected on the wing and despite appearing in 15 match day squads his actual game time has been limited with the arrival of Adam D’Arcy and the emergence of Craig Gilroy.

The recent announcement of the singing of  full back Jared Payne would further reduce McIlwaine’s chances for appearing in his favoured position so with Ulster semingly determined to buy success yet another youngster has had to leave to get match time.

Having watched McIlwaine quite a few times over the last few month for Queens I must say that I’m surprised that Ulster didn’t make more of an effort to keep him as he’s looked a class apart, even when up against other Ulster hopefuls and with . . .
