On Thursday evening Banbridge Academy met Royal Belfast Academical Institution in the final of the Burney Cup at Stormont. The earlier rain had now given way to short spells of light drizzle.
This must be one of the best hockey matches, which I’ve covered all season. The pace was furious, end to end and stamina sapping. Both teams skill sets were impressive and tactically it was chess with hockey sticks.
Banbridge were first to show in a scoreless, fast paced 1st quarter testing the Inst keeper. Inst settled, throwing passes around, which nearly opened the Banbridge defence.
