Tuesday afternoon saw the Medallion Shield Final between Ballymena Academy and Royal Belfast Academical Institution, staged at the Kingspan Stadium.
Inst had run up some big scores over the course of the season and, in many people’s minds, were the odds on favourites. Ballymena thought otherwise!
They rocked Inst back in the opening minutes, through a series of forward drives. A gap opened and Joshua Patterson drove over for the opening try. Ben Collins converted for Ballymena to lead 7-0 after 4 minutes.
Ballymena continued to press but couldn’t take advantage of their possession.
In the end the game turned on the 3 minutes of play before halftime.
