I caught up with the opening round of the newly minted U18 Girls Youth League as a combined club side from Carrickfergus, Larne, Malone and Ophir took on their counterparts at Ards, Ballynahinch, Cooke and Donaghadee. I’m calling them East Antrim and North Down for convenience.

In an entertaining game East Antrim took an early lead with Cara McLean barging over from close range for the opening score after good work from Ruby Starrett. Mia Ferguson converted to give Antrim a 7 – 0 lead.

Tara O’Neill scored two tries and four conversion for Down.
