Sullivan Upper claimed the Medallion Plate after a hard fought win against Rainey Endowed at Roughfort on Saturday morning.

Sullivan Upper and Rainey Endowed Medallion teams met in the final of the Medallion Plate at Roughfort on a dry but cloudy Saturday morning.

There was a stiff breeze blowing down the pitch towards the “Chimney Corner” end and it seemed to be strong enough to dictate the pattern of the game.

Sullivan had the wind at their back in the first half and they took full advantage with a successful penalty from full-back Brett Russell after 3 minutes. Rainey had a chance almost immediately after but it was sliced wide into the strong wind.

The Holywood side then took control with the rest of the half focused in Rainey territory with the exception of an occasional break out from the team from Magherafelt.

An enthusiastic Rainey defence and a few misfiring lineouts saw no further score until the 16th minute when Sullivan captain Jake Scott hit the line after a period of pressure in the Rainey 22. With Russell adding the extras Sullivan had built up a 10 – 0 lead.

Max Readman is quick to pounce on a loose ball for Sullivan’s second score.

Sullivan then took firm control of the match with two quick tries just before half time. Max Readman pounced on a lose pass to scramble over for the first, converted by Russell. In a busy 2 minutes Russell then fielded the kick off and and tore down the left wing to go over in the corner for the second. No conversion this time, but Sullivan had a commanding 22 – 0 lead as the teams changed ends.

With Owen O’Kane converting the first try it was now a 10 point game with Sullivan leading 22 – 12 with nearly 20 minutes left.

There was no doubt that Sullivan had been rattled but they managed to regain their composure and the game settled down to an even battle in the middle of the park. With no further score Sullivan lifted the Medallion Plate after a 22 – 12 win .
