Larne Grammar dominated much of this game in terms of territory and possession, with their scrums particularly dominant. However Cambridge House coped with their attacks reasonably comfortably and it looked as though they had delivered the ultimate sucker punch when their centre broke from deep to feed Kane McIlroy to score an unconverted try with ten minutes to go.
The visitors responded almost immediately with Micah Stevenson barging over from close range after a charge down had created havoc in the Cambridge defense. Jonny Farquhar added the extras to give Larne a 5 – 7 lead.
The drama continued to ramp as James Bovill slotted over an impressive penalty to put Cambridge one point in front but the last play of the game saw Larne awarded a penalty for Sam Wood to convert and claim the match.
Larne will now host Dalriada for their Round 2 game on Saturday 7th January.
