Heineken Cup: Ulster 22 Leicester 16

The greatest club competition in the world kicked off with a regulation 22 – 16 win for the Ulster men at Ravenhill last night.

The Ulster points came from a Tommy Bowe try and the boot of Paddy Jackson with the young out half adding a conversion and five penalties but, despite the win, the Ulster men will be disappointed that they let the Tiggers escape with a losing bonus having outplayed their visitors for all of the second half.

Leicester may be tempted to cling to the forlorn hope that the losing bonus was a result, but with Ferris and Afoa to return alongside an 80 minute outing from Pienaar I’d guess that Ulster have a greater capacity for improvement than the English.

Indeed, with a bit more empathy for the game from the officials, Ulster would have been home and hosed after the first ten minutes of the second half after Jackson and then Cave crossed only to be pulled back for technicalities.
