Heineken Cup: Castres 8 Ulster 9

Ulster gave themselves a fighting chance of a home quarter final recording their first ever competitive win on French soil with their 8 – 9 victory over Castres in a scrappy match on Saturday afternoon.

It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t entertaining but it was effective and Ulster showed great determination  to grind out the win in a fairly nondescript match.

As many times before this season it was Ulster’s defence that won this game with Henry and Diack excelling at the breakdown but, if Ulster do get that home quarter final, they can thank it a fairly limited Castres back line as a team with inventive backs would have chalked up an unassailable lead in a first half littered with Ulster errors.

That our old friend Pedrie Wannenburg got man of the, match from the French broadcasters, gives a good indication of the flavour of the game and it’s a pity that neither Wilson or Williams lasted the course to go on that head to head that big Pedrie obviously desired but the big South African stood out in this game because it meant something to him but, unfortunately for those of us wanting an entertaining game, it . . .
