The two teams didn’t seem phased about the rain, but the wind added a level of difficultly that all Ireland league teams would have struggled with.

Ballymena kicked of the match with the strong wind behind their backs and used it heavily to their advantage by pinning Regent down into their half for most of that first half.

On the 11th minute Regent let Ballymena take the first three points of the game when they failed to roll away and handed Ballymena a shot bang on the twenty two, right in front of the sticks. Out half Reuban Allen carefully added the three to give the home side a 3 – 0 lead.

Ballymena Academy’s Reuban Allen knocked over an early penalty.

The brutal wind and rain kept Regent from getting any go forward ball and on the 20th minute a poor exit from their own 22 lead to a scrambled try by Ballymena, with James Grigg dotting the ball down right beside the posts.

Allen took the half time score to 10 – 0 in Ballymena’s favour when he comfortably knocked over the conversion.

The wind and rain really started to intensify at the start of the second half, making coverage difficult!

The teams faced difficult conditions throughout the game.

Regent used the wind to their advantage and started to apply pressure in the Ballymena half. Both teams made some great line breaks but conditions made it extremely hard to make any good ground.

On the 25th minute of the second half Regent got on the scoreboard when Daniel Moore got over the line. Evan McGonigle added the extras to take the score to 10 – 7.

Regent continued to attack in the remaining minutes but the clock, and the defensive efforts of Ballymena, kept them at one score.
