Friends won the toss and opted to play with the low sun on their backs searching for any advantage for the difficult task ahead.

Campbell kicked off and were immediately had Friends on the back foot with most of the play initially in the Friends 22. On the 7th minute Campbell’s out half Patrick Dorrian flipped an inside pass to Henry Ralston who broke through to score their first try which he also converted.

From the restart Campbell were back on the attack. A 5m line out lead to an advancing maul before the ball was recycled twice and Harry Ord plunged over from the try line ruck. Extras added by Ralston and it was now 14 – 0 on 14 minutes.

Friends had a foray into the Campbell half with an attacking line out 10m from Campbell’s line but the resultant maul was bundled into touch and Campbell regained possession. With play in the mid field Campbell’s tight head prop Charlie Leitch, slipped a delicate one handed pass to his full back Russell Lovo who surged through a tackle before racing in for Campbell’s third try which Ralston converted.

Six minutes later another superb run from the impressive Lovo saw him touch down again under the posts. Extras added and it was 28 – 0 on 28 minutes. With Campbell averaging a point every minute Friends needed a response. Unfortunately small errors just as they were making headway gifted Campbell the ball and Dorrian broke through the centre channel sliding a pass back inside to Ord for him to get his brace, again converted.

Half time whistle and the score sat at 35 – 0 for the home team.

Friends started the second half brightly and were the better team for 10 minutes keeping Campbell in their own half. Captain Ethan Salt was a key figure driving his pack on and Friends will be frustrated they didn’t capitalise on this dominant period. Their 12/13 channel of Scott Henderson and Rod Henderson was effective but the finishing touch was missing at the critical moment.

Campbell pulled themselves together and re-established authority through strong carries from Callum McKinney. Deep in the Friend’s half substitute prop Dylan Dunlop crashed over and the accurate Ralston nailed the conversion. 42 – 0 on the 40th minute.

Another show and go from Dorrian coupled with dazzling steps from Lovo saw him over for his hat trick, this time converted by replacement scrum half Charlie Kirk and Campbell had an unassailable lead at 49 – 0.

Friends’ pushed for a score until the final whistle.

Both benches were emptied and the fractured play allowed left wing George Carson to weave his way under the posts to take the home team to 56-0.

Friends did have a chance to remove the bagel from the scoreboard but bravely choose a line out maul instead of the shot at goal and possibly would have been rewarded if not for a fumbled pass.

Final whistle at 56-0, Campbell looked worth every point. BRA await in 2 weeks.
