On Saturday afternoon Malone II’s hosted near neighbours and rivals Cooke in a Junior Cup tie at Gibson Park. I took in the second half of this game.
Playing with the wind Cooke had established a 14-5 lead at halftime, through George Robb and Adrian Dodd tries, converted by Andy Hannah. Malone’s try was scored by Maddy Hamilton.
Playing against the wind, Cooke changed tactics, running the ball on most occasions.
Cooke tries by Dan White, Andy Nelson, Stuart Elwood and a second by Robb, three converted by Andy Hannah gave Cooke a commanding lead. Malone responded with a Thomas Leitch intercept try, converted by Tim Cuanne.
Cooke were delighted with a 40-12 win against their old rivals and progress to the Junior Cup Quarter Finals.
