The Barbarian Cup: Ulster U20 26 Ballymena U20 5

We are currently carrying out a necessary behind-the-scenes upgrade to how images are stored and delivered on The Front Row Union Sports. With over 770,000 images on the site, we are moving our entire image library to a dedicated cloud storage service. This means images will load faster for you, regardless of where you are in the world, and the site will be more reliable overall.

As we are working on three separate versions of images during the offload process, the site cache sometimes struggles to keep up with which version to display and occasionally post grid images or complete galleries may fail to appear. This is a temporary side effect of the migration process — the image exists and is safe, it is simply in the process of being moved to its new home and identified as being there. A refresh of the page will usually bring them back, however, if it does not please contact john@thefrontrowunion.com stating clearly the post address and we will restore it as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes and appreciate your patience.

We expect the bulk of the image migration to be completed by the end of June 2026, with a fully upgraded version of the site ready to launch in August 2026. Once that work is done, the site will be noticeably faster, images will load more reliably, and you will not see any further disruption of this kind. Thank you for your continued support of The Front Row Union Sports.

There has been much talk of late from Ulster Rugby headquarters about how the youth game is to be developed to ensure a continual supply to the senior side so we popped along to Eaton Park, Ballymena on Saturday to have a look at the up and coming youngsters in the Ulster U20 set up.

It was good to see some of the players we’d watched during our Schools Cup coverage feature on both sides with Larne Grammar, Friends School Lisburn and of course Ballymena Academy all being represented as well as the usual powerhouses.

The Ulster side started The Barbarian Cup match very strongly running in three tries in the opening twenty minutes with Ian Henderson, Stewart Simpson and all dotting down in rapid succession. converted two, taking the score to 19 – 0.

The Barbarian side however, managed to organise their defence and began to apply pressure of their own. Despite a few good runs they were unable break through the well organised Ulster defence before half time.

Both defences were on top throughout the second half but it was the Barbarians who scored next with Michael Cromey powering over mid way through the second half. Alan McCluggage missed the conversion taking the score to 19 -5.

Ulster fought back and applied pressure close to the Ballymena line. Following an impressive drive in the scrum the ball was shipped to Paddy Jackson who dummied and skipped over under the posts to dot down for the final try of the match. Jackson converted his own try taking the final score to 26 – 5.
