Women: AIL Week 1 Preview

The Women’s All Ireland League kicks off this weekend amid much pomp and ceremony, a bit of a photoshoot and a video.

It’s the least that these hardworking clubs deserve and let’s hope it’s the start of genuine investment in this competition and not just a box ticking exercise.

As the foremost women’s club rugby competition in Ireland this is where the stars of the future should be coming from, with their feet grounded in real rugby, and if the IRFU do want to invest in the Ireland Women’s team this is where they have to start.

The competition has taken a bit of a battering in the close season with Highfield withdrawing from the league and three senior players accepting invitations to go and play in the Tyrells Premier League, over in England, a competition of similar standards but better promotion.

This leaves us with seven teams playing three matches over 14 weekends, so let’s have a Front Row . . .
