Women: Senior Clubs kick off this weekend.

by

Forget the 2015 Rugby World Cup the highlight of my weekend will be the start of the Women’s AIL1 season which kicks off on Sunday afternoon.

There is a lot of crap spouted about the growth of the women’s game, and while there may be plenty of new recruits signing up for tag and touch and plenty of PR about the Seven’s Olympic programme there are progressively fewer and fewer players making their way into the Women’s 15 – a – side club game, particularly in Ulster.

Yet again the IRFU has re-jigged the All Ireland League, which now sees two Ulster clubs in the top division, but the Ulster Branch, in particular, appear to be missing a major marketing opportunity over the next two seasons given that all twelve of the play off matches of the 2017 Women’s Rugby World Club will be taking place in Belfast.

At this point in time it’s entirely feasible that the 2017 WRWC could be taking place in our own back yard without . . .

Delighted to see it but there aren’t enough senior teams in Ulster. There is only Enniskillen in the west not enough effort being made to capture the older mid 20’s players!!

City of Derry, Clogher Valley, South Donegal and Omagh might disagree with you… But I agree the demographic favours the east!
