Ulster battled to a 26 – 16 win against, league leaders, Ospreys on Friday night at Ravenhill moving to second place in the PRO12 in the process.
Ulster’s tries came from Darren Cave (2), who picked up Man of the Match, and Franco van der Merwe. Paddy Jackson had a fine night with the boot, before going off injured, knocking over a conversion and two penalties and his replacement, Ian Humphreys, added a late conversion.
I’d predicted a tight game but it looked as though Ulster were going to run away with it when they racked up 13 unanswered points in the opening half hour. Cave was first to get on the scoreboard, diving over from close in, after a Jackson break ended with the forwards battering the Ospreys line. Jackson added the extras and knocked over two penalties as the Ulster forwards dominated the scrum.
Sam Davies pulled back three points for the Ospreys on the 32nd minute but Ulster rubber stamped their forward dominance with van der Merwe finishing off another forward rumble as half . . .
