Schools-Cup-Predictions

Ok, so after my previous clean sweep, last week was bound to go quite a bit worse for me, as indeed proved to be the case. Let’s see if I can redeem myself with this week’s Cup and Plate predictions despite the fact it won’t be easy given that, in theory, teams should be matched closer than they were in previous weeks:

RBAI V MCB I watched last years final and the best team won, this quarter final was different, and on the balance of play RBAI were the better team, however they butchered two clear overlaps and missed a sackful of kickable penalties. But fair play to MCB, they took their two opportunities and won.

Just a thought, throughout the season teams get ranked on their wins etc, and then entered at various stages of the competition. Surely it would make more sense to then use the rankings in the draw, ie two pots one with the top 8 seeds the other with the qualifiers, this continues until you only have 4 teams left, or alternatively do away with ranking/seeding and enter all teams from round 1

Well, for a start the rankings are something I have created and are not an official Ulster Branch system, so I don’t know how they decide exactly who is seeded where (some are obvious, of course).

I think there is actually a good balance between seeding/free draw under the current format: it enters stronger teams at later rounds but doesn’t protect them so much that it gives the less capable sides a chance of progressing. The only thing I have though in the past which might be an improvement is to move to a tournament set-up, i.e. group stage then knock-out, so that one loss doesn’t mean immediate expulsion from the competition.

Think RBAI will pull a win out of the bag, the lost at Pirrie in October but have improved greatly since then, home advantage is a big plus. As for a former Inst man going for MCB !!! Hang your head in shame:-)

Well, I do stand by my comments that MCB are probably just that tiny better than Inst so far this season, hence the prediction, but totally agree that Saturday’s game will be a different one from the match at Pirrie Park. Like I said, I’m not really ‘going’ for MCB, just minimising losses; I will be hoping that prediction is totally wrong 🙂

Whoops…that’s what happens when you type too quickly; of course, it doesn’t help my cause that I am indeed a townie…
