PRO12: Ulster 29 Munster 19

by

Ulster showed enough of their class to dispose of an an energetic Munster 29 – 19 at a rocking Ravenhill on Friday night.

Ulster tries came from Jared Payne and Darren Cave with  Ruan Pienaar chipping in with both conversions and five penalties to secure Ulster’s win.

I said in my preview that the visitors possessed an enthusiastic but limited backline and a bunch of seasoned Turnips up front and they showed the best and worse of both in a game of two halfs.

Ulster really should have had this game wrapped up by the 40th minute so cack were the Munster men. An early penalty from Pienaar, on the fourth minute was quickly followed by a Payne converted try, two minutes later, with the talented Kiwi dotting down a delightful grubber kick from Jackson.

Munster enjoyed a period of possession, going through fifteen odd phases, but the fact that they lost about fifteen yards during this period highlighted the gulf in class between the back lines and Ulster inched further ahead . . .

Great game of rugby, Ulster almost out of sight on 35 minutes, then almost conceding defeat around 75 minutes. In reality Munster are a very limited team and not the team of yore, which doesn’t say a lot for the Ulster team’s performance. Their defence of the rolling maul close to their goal line won’t be lost on Montpellier and Leicester.(don’t be fooled by the French clubs alleged away form, when Fabian Galthie sees an Achilles heel, enough said)
The next two weeks is at the business end of Europe’s main contest, no hiding places. Let the show begin.

  2. So who is the strange man in this pic??????

  3. Hee hee James I suppose all those homey calls at Thomond over the years makes you feel you’re a bit of an expert lol! Great to see you and Sinead. Hopefully catch up with you both again in May….

  4. considering ulster had their H backline out, to only score 2 tries was not good. Trimble must have some great pictures that he is holding over the Raver boys. He was poor against what was Munsters second string back line. on a plus, great to see rolling mauls being so effective. The last penalty was Homey Rolland to a tee, still was great to have a proper game to travel and see. Roll on 10/5 when we secure a home semi and have the Ulster boys consigned to 5th place
