Heineken Cup: Ulster 27 Montpellier 16

Ulster failed to fire on Friday night despite producing  27 -16 win against Montpellier at a muted Ravenhill.

Robbie Diack, Ruan Pienaar and John Afoa all scored tries, converted by Pienaar who added two penalties from the boot, but it was a night when Ulster’s thoughts appeared to be on next weeks match against Leicester.

At least I hope that’s the reason for this somewhat muted display as Ulster were well off the boil against an enthusiastic, but ultimately a second string, Montpellier.

It was a scrappy start from the home side with Pienaar missing an early penalty chance. Montpellier took full advantage, and the lead, knocking over their first attempt from the boot of Eric Escande.

Ulster definitely looked unsettled and the visitors rush defence caused continual problems both on the pitch and on the Prom but the fickle fans and nervy players where somewhat mollified on the 23rd minute when a inch perfect cross field chip by Paddy Jackson was fielded out on the touchline by Diack and . . .
