Good question! I had wondered this myself after plugging in the results and went back to check I had done it correctly.

So, while the rankings do take into account scores of each match, they calculate an average score across all matches so that one heavy defeat or strong win won’t count for as much as a series of them.
In the case of RS Armagh, they had a relatively low opponent average; playing Sullivan greatly boasted that and so improved their overall score despite losing the game. Their points bonus decreased by a small amount but not so strongly as to keep them from moving up. Remember: the rankings are for a season average, they are not a current form guide.
Their season ranking is below Belfast HS because the latter is the better side so far, but they rank above them because they share the same score but are currently seeded as a fourth round team in comparison to Belfast who are set to enter at round 3.

For next season, it would be my desire to implement score bonuses on a game-by-game basis rather than as an average as they are now. This is what was changed about the opponent rating in recent seasons and it gives much more accurate results.

Thanks for your input; hopefully that makes some sense!

Have to ask! How 3rd plays 6th slaughters them 67- 0 (a game I was at). 4th plays 5th wins 17 -10 and 6th jumps to 5th even though they still have a season ranking below the now 6th?

      Sorry that was 3rd v 8th not 6th

You’re the second person to mention this fixture. Is it definitely a 1stXV match because Sullivan have their weekend fixture listed as Regent House? If it is a 1stXV we would cover it live via the @schoolsrugby Twitter account

      1. Rick

Yes definitely. Sullivan are putting out a 2nd XV against Regent.

Thank, Rick. I’ve been told that the MCB v SUL 1stXV game has been arranged separately so we will plan to be there on Saturday morning
