Ravens: Ulster made to sweat by tight Jersey!

Ulster Ravens held on last night to record their first win in the British and Irish Cup with a 24 -19 win at a rain lashed Ravenhill.

Jersey opened the scoring after a period of pressure in the Ulster half. A back row break of the back of a scrum was fed to Jersey captain Alex Rae who went over for the opening score. FRU favourite Niall O’Connor missed the conversion in difficult conditions to leave the score at 0 – 5.

James McKinney opened the scoring for the Ravens on the 28th minute landing a penalty after a collapsed scrum and the Ravens took the lead following a piece of heads up rugby from David McIlwaine. The full back was tackled, but not held, when fielding a ball near his own line and seeing his chance the resilient Larne man got up to outpace the defence over the length of the pitch, scoring in the corner. McKinney missed the conversion but Ulster led 8 – 5.
