Women: Chicago Lions 7’s – Journey to Nationals

Isn’t it wonderful the journeys that rugby takes us on.

Some of our long time readers may remember a visit to these shores by the ladies college side Milwaukee Panthers five years ago. The team quickly became FRU Favourites and I have been delighted to follow the progress of the Alumni over the years as they have progressed with their rugby careers. The team was dotted with potential stars and I was pleased to hear via Facebook that two of our special favourites, Brittany Biedenbender and Mollie Martin, went head to head in the recent USA National Club Sevens championships in Pittsburgh.

It didn’t start out as easy as one would think for the Chicago Lions Women’s sevens team considering the experience and success of the men’s team. The Chicago Lions had never had a women’s side, but after talks with the Lions coaches and our captain (and current USA 15’s Eagle), Kate Daley, they decided to start a competitive women’s side and have us practice alongside the men’s team.
