Six Nations: Ireland 13 France 13

Ireland continued to stutter in the Six Nations, now going three matches without a win.

However there were some promising performances in this match, with Paddy Jackson restoring his reputation from the tee and the pack made an attempt to front up against their opponents. Id had Ireland to go down by a margin in this one so in that light the draw has to be seen as a good result.

The conditions proved to be the leveller in this game with both teams playing for territory early on. Ireland came out top in the kicking game, with Murray showing good form with his box kicks and ten minutes in a sliding grubber from O’Driscoll pinned France back on their own 5 meter line.

The Irish pack had been mauling well and the resulting lineout and maul led to Heaslip going over for the opening score after good work from McCarthy. Jackson added the extras and Ireland led 7 -0.

That was about it though as the game degenerated into a kicking competition as both teams kicked for territory looking to pick up  scraps from mistakes. Ireland dominated the lineouts and France got the calls at the scrums and it . . .

I doubt that you’ll find many old farts who will disagree with your analysis, OF. Looking at the attrition rate in our back division this 6N, it’s hard not to think that our backs are simply too small for this modern game of bish bash bosh and the sheer size of Bastereau and Tuilagi, etc.

More to the point, whats happened Lansdowne Road………I’ve been to every International game at the new Aviva, and there is no more Lansdowne Roar. The English and French fans made it feel like home games for their respective teams this year, all the home support does now is whistle………badly.
Alan Quinlan’s article was spot on after the England match, and nothing had changed against the French………takes 10 minutes to fill the seats after kick off, and they pour out 10 minutes before 1/2 time to return 10 minutes into the second half.
When the teams run out, expecting a roar of Irish support ……2/3 of the stadium is empty. No Atmosphere compared to the old place, win lose or draw.
I went down yesterday looking for an excuse to renew debenture seats held since the original inception of 10 year tickets in 1983………and came home with no intention of doing so. Reasons…… Sunday matches, late kick offs (so no chance of letting the train take the strain) having to spend 1/2 the game letting people past my seat, and having to watch glorified rugby league………They wonder what has happened French flair………the modern game dosn’t allow flair…….its a bullocking match ………won and lost by what the ref does and does not see, and scrum induced penalties that no one understands. There hasn’t been French flair in the past 15 years, because the modern game has no place for a Sella. You would need a 6 ft side step to get round the modern centre, who are more often than not, as wide as they are long, and even then, what would be the point, because a lock or a prop would be standing behind him.
