PRO12: Edinburgh 14 Ulster 8

I’d said in my preview that these games are always hard to predict and so it proved. I still expected a comfortable enough win for Ulster but circumstances conspired to produce a battling win for Edinburgh. If both teams had taken their expected points a 14 all draw would have been a fair enough result.

Neither team played particularly well in a game riddled with mistakes but Edinburgh wanted it a bit more and they took their chances with Piers Francis landing two penalties in the first half to Paddy Jackson’s one. The teams turned round with Edinburgh leading 6 – 3.

Second half was a bit more lively with Ulster upping their game. However Jackson left nine points on the pitch  and Edinburgh regrouped and worked their way up field for Stuart McInally to burl over for the opening try. The conversion was missed but, in a poor game, it looked as though 11 – 3 would be enough!

Ulster finally managed to string some passes together and the move of the game ended up with Jarred Payne putting Andrew Trimble in with a lovely weighted kick to take the score to 11 – 8 giving Ulster a glimmer of a . . .
