Heineken Cup: Ulster 23 Glasgow 6

Ulster secured participation in the Heineken Cup knock out stages, for the third successive year, after a 23 – 6 win over Glasgow at cold and wet Ravenhill last night. The scores came through tries from Nick Williams, Jared Payne and Darren Cave with Ruan Pienaar adding a conversion and two penalties.

It’s been a while since I was last at The Fortress and it was great to be back, despite the weather, or maybe because of it as it seemed to keep the “Jolly Boys Outings” types off the Prom in and in the dry which was welcome.

This was a night for the die hard supporter, especially on the unsheltered Prom, and personally I think the torrential downpour added to the atmosphere. Certainly myself and those around me were so wet after 15 minutes that further downpours were incidental. The conditions were harsh and the jokes were harsher as Messers King, Finlay, and our Canadian guest, Walker kept up their own deluge of witty repartee!

Things on the pitch were no laughing matter however; Ulster had a game to win. Throughout the noughties the fifth round of the Heineken Cup usually owed more to chaos theory and advanced statistics . . .
