Wannenburg to leave

Ulster Rugby today confirmed that back-row forward Pedrie Wannenburg will leave the club at the end of this season.

Pedrie, who has represented the Springboks on 20 occasions, joined Ulster ahead of the start of 2010-11 from the Blue Bulls franchise in South Africa. The opportunity to bring him to Belfast arose when Ulster’s deal with Xavier Rush (who was to leave Cardiff Blues for Ulster) fell through, but the impact that Pedrie has had since arriving in Belfast well and truly illustrates that every cloud has a silver lining.

In his first season at the club Pedrie featured in an outstanding 29 out of 30 competitive games amassing more minutes on the pitch than any other player that season in a feat of consistency and durability and in doing so became a real fan favourite.

Pedrie has remained a very important part of the squad in his second season in Belfast although injuries picked up both away to Edinburgh in January and at home to the same opposition in March have led him to miss a handful of games.

Agree with Junty, sad to see P3 go and by all accounts he wanted to stay. It would appear the problem was the length of the contract the IRFU would allow, one year as opposed to the three years afforded to Rodger which would seam churlish as both players were born in 1981. Unless Humph has a big backrow signing lined up for next season we are starting to look light in that area if P3 and Willie move on.

Heard P3 was heading to Castre though. 🙄

The IRFU were quite right in suggesting that only a one year extension was appropriate for P3 and I’m surprised if anyone in Ulster Rugby offered more.

Of course P3 wanted to stay in Ulster, with his SA mates, but I don’t think it was at any cost and it is my understanding that it was over remuneration rather than duration of contract that caused the deal to break down.

Willie might be staying now in the expectation that Mr Anscombe might actually try and develop him as an openside

Was P3’s card marked when Ulster signed Roger … or was it that Ulster signed Roger because Stade Francais had already head hunted P3 for next season ?????? therin lies the question.
Regardless .. the big man has served Ulster rugby well and I personally will wish him all the best for the move to his new club next season, but he’s still an Ulster player til the end of the season….. and lets hope that he can take an H cup winners medal with him to show off to the Parisienne aristocrats !
