PRO12: Cardiff 21 Ulster 14

Ulster’s rollercoaster season hit the down ramp last night with a poor display at Cardiff Arms Park with the hosts winning 21 – 14  in a scrappy match.

Unfortunately, it was easy to see this one coming, for, when all the emotion of Ulster’s Heineken Cup Qualification is taken out of the season, there have been precious few good performances to look back on.

Ulster have totally and utterly nailed their flag (six or nine county variety)  to playing Biff, Bash and Bosh in the back row and have set their stall out accordingly in all aspects of their play. Unfortunately if this doesn’t work, or if Biff and Bosh aren’t available, then they have neither the knowledge or the skills to react and this sort of worries me as, while we have a lot of good back row players in the squad and the Academy, there aren’t that many with the physical aspects of Biff, Bosh or even Bash coming through.

Last week, against the Dragons, the culmination of  the emotion of the preceding days combined with a fairly limited Dragons side resulted in a bonus point win but last night there were no external factors . . .
