Match Report: Munster 35 Ulster 10

Following their disappointing loss to old rivals Leinster last week, Ulster were determined to make amends this week against another interprovincial side, Munster. However, despite fielding an almost completely different team, the result was the same for the Ulstermen as they failed to defeat the opposition and fell to a 35 – 10 loss.

Ulster played well from kick-off as they camped in Munster’s half, forcing the opposition back towards their own 22. However an infringement from Ulster five minutes into the game provided Paul Warwick the chance to give his side an early lead. He sliced his kick, leaving the score unchanged. Munster 0 Ulster 0.

Four minutes later, Munster found themselves being penalised after deliberately slowing the ball down. Paddy Wallace, who started the game at fly half, immediately opted for the posts and slotted over his first kick of the game. Munster 0 Ulster 3.

Ten minutes into the game and Ulster looked to have found their form, when winger Tommy Seymour . . .

Mote – I somewhat agree with your comments, a cool head was needed in those last few moments of the game, when we got the penalty for Howlett’s offence and sinbinning there was no time for the lineout…… no mission of retrieving a losing bonus point ….. we lacked a leader on the field to tell someone to kick the fecking ball off the park so that Munster could not get a last try and a bonus point. If you seen Mick O’Driscoll a few minutes earlier rallying his troops and demanding for the 4th try and the bonus point !!!! they had a leader on the park … sadly we didnt.
However credit to all the young players who didn’t let the shirt down, yes their inexperience showed and at times they tried to take the ballthrough themselves instead of passing outside to their teammates ( especially Luke Marshall’s great run .. he had men outside him and an overlap)
Much could be said of the inconsistent reffing … but we must as a team learn to play the ref as other teams do.
Roll on Fri night and Treviso

In my view Marshall was man of the game with 10 minutes to go but the subsequent 14 points had their birth in what was basically a rush of blood by him as he tried to inspire pace into Ulster’s game when what was actually required was a cool calm approach.

The forwards had taken a defensive pounding for most of the second half and needed field position and time to recover what they did not need was a team mate hareing down the pitch with out support .

In both games against Munster Ulster folded in the last ten minutes playing hot head rugby i think there is a lesson to be learnt from those experiences. you don’t win matches or get losing bonus points playing high risk rugby with tired forwards and inexperienced backs
