British and Irish Cup Draw.

Willie Faloon, Ulster Rugby The British and Irish Cup draw has been announced today and where possible the organisers have tried to reverse the fixtures from last season.

Ulster are again in Pool C with English Championship sides Bedford Blues, London Welsh and Moseley and they are joined this time round by Neath and Swansea from the Welsh Principality League.

The major change to the format is the introduction of a quarter final round so now two teams out of each group go through to the knock out stages. Should Ulster finish in first or second place in their group they will play the winner or runner up from Group A which features Cornish Pirates, Currie, Leinster, Newport, Plymouth Albion and Worcester Warriors.

The Ulster Ravens fixtures should take place on the following weekends.

Oct 16 – Swansea v Ulster Ravens

Dec 11 – Bedford Blues v Ulster Ravens

Dec 18 – Ulster Ravens v Moseley

Jan 15 – Ulster Ravens . . .

Flat-top I forgot to ask where did u hear about Guinness and the Premiership ? Who are the major sponsors of it now ?

Given that all the group games fall on Heiny w/e and knockout games on probable magners w/e – good chance the youngsters will get a chance throughout the tournament. Possibility of a double header with the Ravens as the “warm-up” act? I think Munster did something similar last season with the SF v the Ravens on before a magners game.

I see that most Ravens fixtures are on Heineken Cup weekends. It will be interesting to see which way the fixtures work out with the first team. I can hear Mr Angry complain about the “extra” matches on his season ticket now! 🙂

youre right flattop – there was some great rugby played by the ravens that only the ‘few’ who did venture to Ravenhill last season managed to see. There was some real raw talent on show and yes of course they did struggle from time to time but overall they performed well. It was great also to see the visiting ‘crowd’ of Aberavon supporters who despite getting well and truly beaten, they enjoyed the craic on the prom during the game and afterwards in the scoop.

I think it may be a little tougher for the Ravens to progress from the pool this year with probably the tougher fixtures being away from home. Then once clear of the pool I think the Worcester Warriors will be a hard team to beat if they can retain much of their premiership squad (by the way did you realise that Guinness are no longer the major sponsor of the premiership league).

Its a shame more of this comp doesn’t make it onto TV, I am sure that with the number of channels available someone would pick-up the rights to broadcast.
