Savannah, GA

As the upper Midwest slowly thaws out, the UW-Milwaukee Women’s RFC went in search of a warmer climate.  And, of course, rugby.

Although the Lady Panthers have been practicing since late January, they’ve been unable to have a full contact practice due to, well, snow.  So the Lady Panthers packed up after their last mid-terms on Thursday and started out on the 1,100 mile, 17 hour trip to Savannah, GA for the Shamrock’s annual Rugby Tournament.

Round 1: UW-Milwaukee Women 12 – University of Maryland Women 0
In the first game, the Panthers drew University of Maryland – one of the first MARFU opponents the club has faced in quite some time.  After shaking lots of rust off in the beginning of the game, the Panthers started to find some cohesion and eventaully got on the board with a try by flanker Meghan Hausman.  Open wing Brittany Biedenbender would touch down in the second half with a conversion added by scrumhalf Brittany Houston.  The game may have gone the other way if not for some great stops by fullback Mollie Martin and added defensive pressure by flankers Lia Arntsen and Meghan Hausman.

Round 2: UW-Milwaukee Women 31 – Indiana University 0
The UW-Milwaukee Women faced off against fellow Midwest opponent Indiana University in the second game, which was decidedly all Panthers.  After getting the jitters out of their system and the cobwebs off the game strategy early in the day the Panthers managed to put up 5 unanswered tries with three conversions.  The scoring was led by open wing Brittany Biedenbender with 15 points on 3 tries.  Brittany Houston added 6 points on three conversions.  And Flyhalf Lindsey Fickau and No. 8 Kati McCormick both dotted down.
